Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and BP are establishing the Clean Energy Commercialization Centre (CECC) as a Sino-foreign equity Joint Venture. The purpose of this JV is to commercialize and integrate clean energy technologies with a particular focus on developing clean coal conversion technologies developed by CAS and other Chinese R&D affiliations for the production of transport fuels and chemicals.
Specifically the JV will be involved in the following activities:
-Advanced engineering design, simulation and modeling to provide technology solution and engineering packages for the deployment of clean coal technologies in large scale commercial plants.
-License and transfer technology know-how to potential clients.
-Provide service in catalyst development, process design, inspection, operation, training and project management for technology development and commercialization.
-Provide domestic and international IP management services, including act as a technology licensor/agent on behalf of technology owners.
CECC JV will also provide a strong platform for the BP Coal China BU to lead BP coal conversion related activities with the intent to build a material clean coal conversion business in China over the next 20 years. A key success factor for the business growing will be technologies able to convert coal to clean fuels and chemicals at lowest cost and with a progressive reduction of CO2 emission. The establishment of this JV is of strategic importance to both BP and the Chinese government and an important step to help development of the basis for the future energy infrastructure of China.
The total investment during the first 5 years of JV operations is expected to be ~US$75m. CAS will hold 51% of the shares in the JV and BP will hold 49% of the shares. The CECC JV is expected to have a total staff of 50 and will be located in Shanghai. The JV started activities since the first quarter of 2009, and now about 25 staffs, including secondees from CAS and BP, are working with CECC.
